Do you want to make your dorm feel like home but can’t? I bet changing your dorm room bedding can make a significant difference. You may get dorm room bedding sets anywhere. But do you know what bedding suits your ambiance or matches your aesthetics?

If you still need to, you can check out my blog before your freshman year starts.

Bedding essentials for dorms are different than your bedroom kits. For example, you need dorm bedding sets twin XL sheets as the dorm beds are larger than standard sizes.

There is other nitty-gritty you need to know.

Do you get matching toppers and pillow covers? It depends on the aesthetics of the rest of the room. At the same time, you can make a good storage space out of the space under your bed.

Hence, it is apparent that bedding is a critical part of your college dorm room essentials

Key takeaways:

Your dorm room bedding needs these essentials. So, make a note of the following now:

  • Buy cotton bed sheets; they are durable and friendly to your skin.
  • The same goes for pillow covers and duvets as well
  • Also, remember to buy two sets of everything for dorm room bedding
  • Trying buying basic pillows, and avoid bringing dorm bedding from home
  • But you can bring your favorite comforter or mattresses if you like
  • Lastly, use the space under the bed wisely. It can be the most significant storage space in your tiny dorm room.

Sorting the bed sheets for you

The two most essential things in your dorm room bedding are the mattress and the bed sheets.

Without anyone, your bed is incomplete.

Did you have any favorite bed sheets back home? I mean- I can relate. I wanted to take my Spongebob-printed bed sheets when leaving for college.

But my mom advised otherwise. She said- “Firstly, you will never care to clean the sheets on time!”

And I couldn’t agree more. Laundry feels like the most wretched thing to do, and there are many others like me.

Secondly, she warned me that dorm beds get dirty quickly. As there was rarely any other furniture in the dorm, I spent most of my time on the beds. That’s why I felt the bed sheets were soiled in no time.

What should you do?

You can buy two sets of bed sheets and pillow covers. You can invest as much to buy your favorites online or offline. But I feel that’s redundant. Instead, invest in two sets of dark colored bed sheets.

Dark colors hide the dirt on the sheets easily. And you will do well if you clean them once a month also.

Best buy:

  • Threshold 400 cotton bed sheets from Target (offline)
  • Solid color bedsheets from Amazon, Urban Outfitters, and sites like these are all priced under $30.

Comforters

If you consider bringing your comforter from home, it’s a big NO from my side. Firstly, college dorms have twin XL beds. So, your regular comforter won’t fit in. Secondly, buying a good comforter (woolen preferably) has no meaning.

You will only use it for a few years. After that, it may not be of any use. That’s why moms suggest cheaper dorm room bedding sets while making your dorm room checklist.

I found a comfortable, durable, and less costly option in Utopia. Dorm Co also sells such designs. If you buy it from Utopia, remember they don’t make the standard twin XL design. However, their standard twin bed size is easily more than 88 inches. So, you can easily buy that.

You may also explore other cheap options. If you are willing to examine offline possibilities, I have more suggestions. Visit the nearest market to your dorm. You will find stores selling dorm room bedding. In my college days, I bought bedding items frequently from those shops.

I feel you will get the best prices there. Alternatively, you can wait for the annual Amazon or eBay sale.

Duvet covers

I usually suggest mattress toppers to students. You can do well with duvet covers. However, placing toppers for that extra padding on top is advisable.

As you would stay in bed most of the time, you need a comfortable one.

Again, I can’t say that dorm mattresses are too comfortable. So, a middle-way solution would be buying a mattress topper. After that, we can recall our focus on duvets.

What kinds of duvets should you buy?

As usual, I suggest against investing a lot of money in bedding. But there’s no denying you need comfortable and cozy dorm room bedding for a few years.

Otherwise, you will face many issues:

  • I may also hamper your sleep
  • However, staple cotton is accessible on the skin.

So, I suggest buying covers made of staple percale fabric. Such covers are less costly than others.

A premium cotton cover may cost around $100. However, basic white cotton covers may cost below $30. At this price, you may get basic prints like stripes, dots, and cheques. But solid colors are always better than basic white or light colors. The reasons are already known.

Blankets

There are some specifications I want you to know coming to blankets:

  • Buy a double-sided blanket which you can use reversibly and hence need not clean for a long time
  • Buy a woolen one, as it is suitable for your skin
  • The coziest blanket has faux fur on the rear side and a sateen finish on the upper side.

If you have space in your room, you can buy a spare one. I had a Garnet Hill blanket that filled me up for three years. But, for dorm room bedding Ikea can also be a good option. However, yours may wear out with time. So, you may use the two alternatively.

Most of the students stack college dorm bedding bundles under the bed. But don’t keep it in the open. You can buy a bug hamper and keep it inside. When needed, bring it out. Use it and keep it back.

More about blankets and throws

Blankets can act as good bed toppers. With your blanket spread, you can add a lounging feel to your dorm. Or you can keep yours wrapped inside it.

What if I care about aesthetics?

Well, you can certainly do that. But your expenses will increase if you wanna maintain chic dorm room bedding. For that, you can buy three to four plush throws. Try to match the color of the throws with the bed or contrast it.

For example, many students want to implement pink dorm room ideas.

They may get a magenta and another baby pink throw to begin with. With that, they will need white bed covers or sheets. That would make an ideal dorm room bedding for girl

Add pink pillow covers.

But throws are more undersized in general. The standard size is 60×80 inches. So, you cannot use a throw as a bed cover. However, you can pile it into folds and keep it at the rear side of your bed.

Dorm room essentials for guys

Are you looking for the best dorm bedding for guys? Well, you can try Dormify once. I bought my bed sets from Dormify in my final year of college.

But the question is, how can guys make their twin XL bedding look cool? That’s possible. But remember, you are in college. It is better to avoid extravagant things like the ones you used back home.

I realized during college that minimalist dorm room layout ideas are better for your students. So, I recommend white, grey, or similar toned sheets and duvets for guys.

The dark colors need less cleaning. So, it saves them from the hassle of doing laundry every week.

Guys who want to buy cheap bedding may try Target dorm bedding. In comparison, pottery barn dorm bedding is of finer quality. However, the prices are also higher.

The whole dorm room setting comprises of bed bath and beyond. But bedding sets the tone of your dorm. That’s why selecting the right dorm room bedding is invaluable.

FAQs:

There are many specific queries regarding dorm room bedding. But the most repeating questions appear here:

What type of bedding is best for college?

Staple cotton or jersey knit materials are best for college dorm room bedding. Also, I prefer minimalist designs. Remember to scan local shops for sheets, quilts, covers, and duvets under $50.

What should I put on my dorm bed?

The lowest layer would be a mattress topper or protector. On top, you may place bed sheets. And you can finish the toppings with blankets or comforters.

What size is bedding for the dorm room?

The standard dorm room bedding size is twin XL. However, most sellers do not offer such nig twin sizes. You will only get similar or longer sizes from Urban Outfitters, Dorm Co, Utopia, and others.

The Bottom Line

A sorted bed is the pride of your dorm room. But it would help if you had bedding for the fitting dorm room. The most important things for your dorm bed are mattress toppers, bed sheets, and comforters or duvets.

Now, I always recommend buying basic bedding of solid colors. However, aesthetic lovers can also choose the designs they like.
