Interior design makes more sense when I am making floor plans, too. Interestingly, many people can’t decide where to place furniture or other pieces so their room looks pretty.
It’s a genuine problem, with more than 306000 homes sold last year. To help this population, I will share innovative living room ideas here.
If you share the same problem, you can consult the ideas here. I will also share the unique floor plans for small living rooms and rectangular and square rooms I have already designed.

Tricks to better living room layout ideas
Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all strategy for living room layouts. The same applies to my layout designs, too. For starters, know that your living room serves many purposes.
You watch TV here or play games often. You also sit with friends and family and spend quality time here. The living room is also the playroom for your kids. Usually, I enjoy dinner while watching a movie in my living room.
When a room has so many purposes, it’s tricky to apply a single design to it. But we can start by understanding how we feel when we spend time in our living room.
Do we stay grim and severe and read here or discuss serious stuff only? Or should we gather here to be in good company with each other?
The living room design for the two would be poles apart.
Prompts to best living room layout ideas
You can try these basic living room layout ideas for improving how the space looks:
- A mustard yellow sofa against a Gray Boho wall
- A mirrored panel wall complementing a set of designer sofas
- L-shaped white sofa with matt ottomans in between and pastel green armchairs
- A light grey sofa to go with accent chairs and white, crimson, or macrame wallpapers
- Onyx wall paints with floral printed sofas and armchairs
- A nesting table as the centerpiece, and surrounding canary yellow sofas
- Bright white sofas with chic living room color ideas like white walls and golden rod outlines on the walls
- Lounge chairs surrounding a couch in a spacious outlet
Now, let’s check out flooring patterns. Some are basic and represent an everyday clutter-free ambiance. However, others are a bit complicated, with more utility spacing in the rooms.
1. When your sofa is the centerpiece of the attraction
Are you worried about the small size of your living room? Don’t worry. Now, you can create unique living room layout ideas with only the versatile positioning of your sofa and chairs.
Let’s check out one easy and basic idea. Firstly, place your sofa across the shorter wall of your living room. Then, place two armchairs across from it.
In between, have a 9×12 rug. A fluff one would be good. I know it is a big size for a small living room. But trust me on this one. The rug will make the room seem longer and broader than its dimensions.
Some people suggested a fireplace for a small room, which may also work great despite the small size of the room. I took the cue and altered my idea.
Fireplace in living room furniture ideas
I fathomed this minimalist idea after much brainstorming. So, I don’t like making much change to it. But, as I said, I must also accommodate a fireplace within the same plan.
So, how do I do it?
I will place the two chairs around two corners facing the sofa. Now you have a space between. So, I will plan my fireplace in that spot.
I can’t use the wall behind the sofa, as the furniture covers it entirely. But there’s space on the other wall. So, why not use it?
Other alterations to the plan
Have the basic plan layout in mind. Now imagine pulling both chairs a bit closer to the sofa. Once you do that, the chairs and the couch make an integrated lounge section.
The opposite wall is exposed now. Half the room seems empty now. Hence, I will suggest two concrete changes here:
- It would help if you put up a wall-mounting cabinet and TV to complement it. BAAM! The whole aesthetics are changed in a minute!!
- It would help if you had a rectangular center table now. Thus, people who sit on the chairs can also access it.
**Note: Place the table so the smaller sides face the two chairs. Let the wider side face the sofa. Hence, all five people sitting in the room (3 on the couch and one on each chair) can access the table equally.
2. A more casual and balanced layout
Some people don’t prefer minimalist living room layout ideas withonly seats, with a TV or a fireplace. They would prefer other utilities in the living room, too.
But one thing is constant. We have a rectangular living room here, as well. But let’s omit the big sofa from the previous frame.
Instead, we will have two single sofas placed angularly at two corners of the room. There can be a small coffee table between the sofas.
On the other side, there is a gallery wall. However, people who need utility space in the room can build a wall cabinet on the vacant wall.
A life-size cabinet can complement the urban look of the room. You can use the lower wardrobe cabinet for storage. The upper glass-covered display area includes cutlery, showpieces, books, and collectibles.
There would be two smaller cabinets on the two lengthy sides. That’s all for furniture.
So, where is the TV?
That’s a serious question now. You can place a TV anywhere. But what’s the most suitable spot? My POV is that everyone in the room should be able to watch the TV comfortably.
So, having a slot cut out in the middle of the wall cabinet would be great. However, some people may not like the design.
If you, too, think it’s a cluttered design, here are the alternatives for you:
- We can centrally mount the TV on one of the longer walls. The other wall would have the door around the same place.
- We can also have a small movable cabinet in front of the wall with cabinet. But place it at some distance. Otherwise, people can’t access the cabinet comfortably.
3. Casual living room layout ideas: Configuration 2
Here, the room dynamics remain the same (16×19). What changes are the placement of things? Also, remember that the door remains located where it was.
Now, the sofa sits centrally with its rear-facing one of the longer walls. So, the door is right behind the couch. And the coffee table is on either side of the sofa.
We intend to create a boho effect with versatile seating in this room. But we need more boho living room ideas for the same.
So, we will place two round armchairs and one bean bag in the room. But there are no static locations for these three pieces.
Someone enters the room, they take one of these and sit anywhere they like. When they leave, they keep it there. That’s how the casual arrangement of this room decor is supposed to work.
What are the other changes?
We have three more changes from the previous setting here:
- The life-size cabinet does not exist in this room anymore
- Instead, we have two smaller cabinets (both covered) on two sides of the other longer wall.
- Both cabinets start from the corner and take around 40 to 42 inches of the wall.
- It would be better if you could build wall cabinets in these two positions in the room.
So, which Footprint do You Like?
There is no end to living room layout ideas. I flaunted traditional, chic, mid-century modern, coastal, and boho chic designs. But why this?
These are the most trending and upfront styles you could have asked for. Also, remember that most Americans have sleek and cozy living rooms. So, it’s better if we stick to the basics.
We need multipurpose furniture. Also, utility comes before style. However, we can cherish these trending and space-saving styles anyway. Just have a sofa or similar seating as compulsory.
