Timeless and Modern Designs for your Living Room: Try these BUDGET farmhouse living room ideas

Remember the decor from Brideshead Revisited? That Basilica-style formed roof or the grand and stylish British architecture in the living room? Everything seemed so enchanting. There are plenty of country houses that we have seen during road trips.

When I was young, we often visited the Lake Placid area. I liked a certain arch-roof farm villa there. My farmhouse living room ideas started sprouting when I saw that villa.

I believe that internal decor is a landmark that adds a natural edge to the architecture. But why do designers want farmhouse designs in typical living rooms? Imagine a small apartment on a busy Broadway Street. You barely have a 10×14 or 12×16 space as your living area.

What do designers say?

We know most apartments are single bhk. However, designers still say farmhouse designs seem practical and comfortable in a living room. But I prefer farmhouse designs in modern small living room ideas for something else.

I can easily accommodate timeless but unique and exciting items that elevate the style and functionality of the room in a moment.

For instance, try including woven rattan and other mid-century artifacts in your internal decor. You will promptly see the living room’s aura edging a classic facade. In reality, it’s still a tiny apartment space.

How to add spark with unique farmhouse living room ideas?

A living room is the most enormous canvas that can accommodate the most diverse decor. Farmhouse living room ideas are the most poised and chic ones I dream of implementing in my designer living room. So, here’s a quick highlight of the elements and designs that I want in my living room:

  • A farmhouse layout is incomplete without a shiplap
  • An oriental landscape to go with it

How does Shiplap help?

We want decent farmhouse vibes in our living room. What better than Shiplaps to bring in that? Joana Gaines would probably be the happiest to see it. But trust me, this classic edition also adds a posh feel to the fundamental decor of your vintage farmhouse-themed living room.

To complete the shiplap, you need something else. It can be anything. But mind the color combination. It should be metallic yellow, royal gray, or blue to add a majestic feel.

I was thinking about a metallic finish coffee table with our shiplap. If you don’t have the budget, you can also go for a wall sconce.

Can the landscaping be better?

Yes, of course. It is the yardstick of majesty and sophistication in your farmhouse-themed living room. Many small living room ideas don’t heed landscaping. They focus more on utility and functionality.

But things are not the same anymore. Our idea of landscaping has changed as well. Today, we can’t expect our life-sized portraits or the rarest paintings to adorn our living rooms. So, we must look for alternatives that can fill in the gaps.

I was thinking about a low-hung lounge area that farmhouses flaunt. It can be a curtailed version of the oriental sofa. But the same classic leathery finish and plush paddings are easy to replicate.

The second thing that can add to the sensation is a coffee table. But a fine finish and sharp color won’t do the job. You need a hand-chiseled rustic table that fits just fine with the decor.

That one table could be the center of attraction in your living room. I first learned about such rustic coffee tables when I read McClain’s blog on awkward living room layout ideas.

Later, I realized that a rustic decor would add a subtle non-urbane touch that is conventional for farmhouses.

There shouldn’t be a shortage of relaxing spaces.

A farmhouse decor needs the coziest spaces for people to relax and chill. Mainly, farmhouses were used for fun and entertainment. Or spending quality time. With that essence, I would like to represent an idea I got from a Barrie Benson farmhouse decor.

He is a fan of coastal designs. His chic white decor made me realize coastal auras often match farmhouse vibes. Both decors are airy and cozy. So, my cozy decor, based on farmhouse living room ideas, would include these:

  • A sisal carpet for that typical vintage feel that also goes well with the shiplap and other metallic finishes in the living room
  • A fireplace is a must. It may be a small one. But it would help if you placed it strategically. So that there is a decent seating space in front of it.
  • A room with a high ceiling is better fitted to be farmhouse-themed
  • We also need natural light. So, bay windows would do just great.

More on the fireplace ideas

Many farmhouse living rooms have working fireplaces. Henceforth, it is essential that your themed living room also has one. I don’t expect a stone fireplace in your apartment. But a stone finish is undoubtedly what I am looking for.

Such textured decors on macrame or boho grays look great. But the fireplace alone can’t complement my farmhouse living room ideas. I also need classic living room furniture ideas and spacious doors and windows. Followed by patterned bedding. To create a complete impact.

What kind of furniture would be great?

I need neutral or boho shades to implement the farmhouse living room ideas. Many will say neutrals won’t seem like original farmhouse designs. However, neutral colors go well with symmetric designs, such as a three-seater with two single armchairs and an end table in between.

You don’t need a setup of furniture from the pawnshop to create the farmhouse-like feel. You can instead include small tokens like an 18th-century chandelier upon the seating area with amber or dim-warm lighting.

However, such classic chandeliers may cost around $100. There are other alternatives if you’re not willing to invest so much. You can go for a rattan-wired round-hanging chandelier. It has exposed bulbs for that vintage feel. The finish is rugged, too. That adds to the aura as well.

Vaulted ceiling chandeliers also fare between $40 to $100. If you wish you can go for that too.

What kind of coffee table should you choose?

Choose a coffee table that has prominent hues on it. You can also select a coffee table with a floral design. Many modern farmhouses have either of the two. It creates a formal feel in an otherwise laid-back decor.

At the same time, the rich hues reflect the lights from the chandelier properly. Hence, the reflective aura that it creates will leave the guests spellbound.

That rustic feel matters the most!

Add boho, chic, or coastal elements to farmhouse living room ideas. However, the most prominent landmark in farmhouse-themed rooms is not the shiplap but anything rustic.

Rusticism is the most elemental fusion that makes your small living room seem like a farmhouse. You can also add characteristic rustic hues to the furniture pieces.

There are many ways to do so. Firstly, you can apply wood varnishes to otherwise modern furniture. It will make the furniture seem woody and glossy at the same time.

The complementary gloss and rich hues distinguish elements in a farmhouse-style room from the other living room layout ideas. Here are other ideas you can try to make the rustic feel upright:

Smoothness for elegance  The smooth and pastoral look is customary in the farmhouses. Therefore, you must ensure that the lines and corners have smooth endings. The same goes for the doors and windows in the room.
A mix and match of textures  If you can blend textures well, there is nothing better. Have calming and basic tones for the internal base of furniture. You can then top it up with beige or warm tan shades.
Other royal elements  Royalty is not always costly. You can increase the edge of your existing furniture by adding woven top rugs, velvet tops, and faux leather finishes.
Adding wallpaper to the decor  Choose wallpaper with simple patterns. The more geometric patterns emerged later. So, they would look misplaced in farmhouse-style living rooms.
Choose accent walls carefully.  Plants can add an excellent accent to your living room layout ideas. You can also add accent lights on top of aquariums or similar objects.

Get accustomed to Farmhouse Living.

Placing classy and glossy objects or adding a fireplace can make a real difference in your living room layout ideas. So, why wait? Choose your favorite ideas from the list.

You can now add glamor to your room in a million ways. You don’t need any actual vintage elements onboard. Instead, you can check out the hacks and ideas to convert regular furniture and decor into chic farmhouse decor.

Get a chandelier or a small shiplap or tone up your furniture for that elegant vibe. Enjoy your decor. Let me know how it turned out in the comments!!
