US Supreme Court to Examine Abortion Pill Restrictions

The US Supreme Court is set to examine restrictions on the abortion pill mifepristone, marking the latest development in the ongoing debate surrounding abortion in the United States (Source: ETPharma). This drug, widely used for medication abortions, has seen a significant increase in usage, though it remains less prevalent compared to European countries like France, where medication abortions constituted 70% of the total in 2020.

Distinct from the “morning after” pill, which prevents pregnancy after intercourse, the abortion pill is used to induce abortion after confirming pregnancy. The process involves two pills: mifepristone (RU 486), taken initially, blocks progesterone production, disrupting the pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken up to 48 hours later, causing cramps, bleeding, and uterine emptying. Notably, abortion pills can be used at home without requiring a medical setting.

Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 for use up to seven weeks of pregnancy and later extended to 10 weeks, mifepristone has become a crucial element in abortion services. Planned Parenthood, a major provider, charges an average of $580 for a medication abortion, though costs can reach up to $800.

Considered safe and effective by medical experts, the abortion pill terminates pregnancies successfully in over 95% of cases within the specified time frame. Serious complications are rare, and the pill is not effective for ectopic pregnancies, which occur outside the uterus and represent about 2% of all pregnancies.

Despite its safety record, anti-abortion groups are pushing for nationwide restrictions on mifepristone, even in states where abortion remains legal. The Supreme Court case focuses on limiting the drug’s use to the first seven weeks of pregnancy, rather than 10, and preventing its distribution by mail.

As the Supreme Court prepares to address these restrictions, the case underscores the broader legal battles and societal divisions surrounding reproductive rights in the United States. The outcome will likely have significant implications for women’s access to abortion services and may shape the landscape of reproductive healthcare in the country.
