South American countries have started democratic protests against Israel, showing their response to the conflict with Hamas. The Bolivian leftwing government is cutting entireties with the country. The decision was attributed to human rights and war crimes in the Gaza Strip (Source: The Guardian).

The decision by the Bolivian government was announced at a recent press conference one afternoon on Tuesday by their minister- María Nela Prada. The minister is a part of President Luis Arce’s administration. She declared in the conference that they demand an end to the attacks on the Gaza Strip, highlighting the ruthless killings of thousands of civilians.

The displacement of Palestinians is another reality that was the driving force behind the Bolivian leftwing decision. Soon after the Bolivian statement, the governments of Colombia and Chile recalled their ambassadors from Israel.

The criticism was heavily directed at the continuous airstrikes by Israel on Gaza, where innocent lives have been affected. It is also worth noting that governments across the world are condemning Israel.

The deputy foreign minister of Bolivia- Freddy Mamani Machaca, shared that the decision represents “repudiation and condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.”

Israeli decisions can be perceived as a threat to international security and peace. The horrific situation that the Palestinians are facing is a repetition of Israel’s history of forced occupation. The decision to cut ties with Israel after three years of it being re-established comes from the Bolivian leftwing democratic leader President Evo Morales.

Earlier this month, Morales took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to demand that Israel be classified as a terrorist state and that the Israeli prime minister and his “accomplices” be denounced for war crimes and genocide in an international criminal court.

The ties with Israel were re-established in 2020 by rightwing president Jeanine Áñez.
