The modern world focuses on sustainability – and for good reason. The workplace is evolving to meet the needs of our planet. Here is a selection of ways in which you can help.

The challenges faced by current businesses are numerous. As well as worrying about paying taxes, hiring and firing, and training manuals, they now also have to worry about being sustainable, too.

While changing lightbulbs for energy-efficient ones is a good starting point, that is not the only thing you can do as an SME owner to fulfill your targets as an eco-friendly company.

Here are the best ways you can meet those targets without losing any business or product integrity.

The 5 Ways Your Business Can Become More Sustainable

Changing your lightbulbs is one thing but try these others to save the world through your business.

1 – Packaging

Switching your packaging out to sustainable packaging is a must-do for anyone who wants their SME to do less harm to the environment. The less packaging the better, but you can also substitute plastic wrapping for paper, which is an easily recyclable option.

Likewise, you might change plastic cup holders for paper ones, plastic cups for paper cups, or plastic pens for a sustainable alternative. It all makes a difference.

2 – Recycling bins

If you switch out your office bins for paper/card, bottles and cans, and general waste, you can start to make a big impact on the volume of rubbish which passes through your firm.

Even a recycling bin in the break room can help you reduce office plastic waste. Recycling one single plastic bottle saves you enough money to power a lightbulb for a whole three hours. Unfortunately, only 5% of plastic waste in the US is recycled each year.

3 – Motion Sensor Lights

motion-activated lights

Instead of lights left on at work overnight, treat yourself to motion-activated lights. They will stay off all night and only come on when an employee enters the room. Buying and installing motion sensor lightbulbs is not as costly as you might think, and they will pay for themselves over time.

4 – Switch Supplier

There are many environmentally conscious energy companies nowadays. If you can, try to find one that takes its energy from solar power, waves, or any other recycled type of energy.

There’s no reason not to have 100% green energy nowadays. Also, you might find it cheaper than the supplier you already have. A top tip would be to invest in solar panels for the roof of your building. This might help you sell the excess back to the power supplier, or at least just reduce your bills.

5 – Set up a Team

teams for sustainability

You have teams for individual clients, so why not teams for sustainability? Assign the task to a select group of employees and let them take charge. They can drive new ideas and help put them into action. All you need to do is set it up and let it run.

Is Your Business Sustainable?

If your business doesn’t need any of the above, then congratulations! You are already a sustainable SME superstar.
