Tired of abstract dimensions spoiling your room decor? Try these awkward living room layout ideas.
Did you ever walk into a room feeling something was wrong? the lighting may not be in sync with the room decor. Or the layout is so abstract that it meets the eye immediately.
Many don’t feel the right groove while arranging our living room interiors. At those moments, we can try awkward living room layout ideas. Mostly, such ideas won’t follow the regular ideas of living room management.
However, we got a signature look out of our awkward decor planning. Just remember your room needs to be stylish and functional at the same time.
Some of us live in quirky layouts with unique angles and unconventional proportions. Imagine an 8 x 14 room. It has abundant space. However, using the space would be a real challenge.
For your help, I will share expert tips and unique decor ideas. Learn how to design any awkward living room layout optimally.
Quick tips and easily manageable awkward living room layout ideas
These ideas need 0 knowledge of interior decor, and you can implement them in no time as well:
- Have a corner fireplace, to begin with
- Add small pieces like coffee tables with end tables
- Alternate mirrors and art pieces on the walls to create holographic effect
- Have an unnecessarily big bay window? Organize two single sofas in front with an ottoman between them
- Create a seating with two love seats across from each other.
There are many more unique ideas in the follow-up. Let’s discuss how to plan a decent decor with awkward living room layout ideas.
How do you arrange stuff within awkward proportions?
I took ideas from several ASID professionals and LEED designers. They gave me a strong perception of accommodating awkward living room layout ideas in a dream room setting.
Let me present such ideas here. I also did a presentable ‘mix and match’ of the ideas with my design ideas. So, read on and tell me which ones you liked the most:
1. The most significant wall is a blank canvas
You must find a basis to present your presentation in any awkward room. That basis or foundation is often the most enormous wall in your room. Let’s try a fundamental trick first. You can place the heaviest or biggest furniture, like your sofa and seating set-up, against that wall.
Hence, the other spaces in the room are freed up. Now, you can think about where to place the different components in the room.
Designers like John McClain say organizing your furniture around statement decor is better than accent walls. The statement walls have a monochromatic feel. So, you don’t have to think much about where to place your sofa or chair.
But things are different with an accent wall. Imagine a mural accent wall. There are subtle projections in the art that need exposure. But you have a room with queer dynamics/proportions. So, it is often impossible to flaunt your accent while simultaneously placing your furniture in the right spot.
2. Divide the room into zones
Imagine a queer 8×14 room. It is too rectangular for you to arrange anything conveniently. So, it is better to divide such rooms into specific zones where you can perform multiple functions.
An 8×14 room can have 2 to 3 such zones at best. Jessica Risko shared this idea. I developed it to determine the best zones for such a configuration. Here are the divisions (zones) I have planned:
- A reading zone to begin with, as we all need reading space in the living room. Living room ideas are incomplete without reading spaces.
- Next, you have an elongated conversation area. Here, people can gather in sequence (most viably in a tabular proportion) to talk among themselves
- A TV area where 3 to 4 people can accommodate at the same time to watch the TV or play a game or something like that
3. Create layered dimensions with area rugs
Rugs can always elevate the decor of abstract rooms. Henceforth, I am trying the same idea with my imaginary 8×14 room. Here, I will apply a custom rug that suits my eye. Alternatively, you can use the 9×6 rug that we can buy online. A 9×6 rug costs below $50 on Amazon.
Designer rugs from Urban Outfitters or Dormify may cost somewhere between $50 to $75.
One of McClain’s articles shared another unique idea of rug distribution. He said we could divide the room into three zones and place one rug for each.
It would seem somewhat abstract. But then, we discuss awkward living room layout ideas, after all. The main motive is to see if the organization appears queer or abstract. If it is abstract but meets the eye well.
But some ideas may seem weird. If you feel that the plan of placing divided rugs for the three zones is not clocking, try these ideas:
- Try fluff rugs (most cute versions like magenta or dusky pink, teal, or cyan) that make the zone seem like a separate segment
- Have three rugs of different textured patterns to denote that there are three separate areas
4. The height also matters
Have you ever dealt with variable heights in your awkward living room layout ideas? Probably NO. But it is one of the most critical edges you are exposed to while planning awkward room decor.
Here’s what you can do if there are variable heights in the same room. First, we need creative living room wall decor ideas. Start by installing wall art like posters, paintings, pictures, or wall hangings to play with the difference in heights.
Next, you can buy furniture of different heights for the same room. For example, you can purchase shallow sofas and place them in that part of the room that has a low ceiling.
Many cute Korean lounge pieces are available at IKEA, Etsy, Oriental Furnishings, and more. There may be local stores, too. So, try any. After that, the question arises: How do we fill spaces with a high ceiling?
We can place round armchairs or single sofas in that place, facing each other angularly. We can set up an ottoman or a coffee table at the converging angle.
5. Use Lighting like it’s your savior
Lighting is a game changer in your awkward living room. And there is no better art form than bright lighting to give an edge to that room. The two things that uplift abstract shapes and room configurations are:
- Floor lamps
- Table lamps
You can place three table lamps in the three sections to show that the sections have different auras. You can light vignettes dedicated to conversations in the selection. At the same time, you can install hue lights in the TV area.
You can now adjust the color and brightness level depending on the mood in that area. When watching a horror movie, you can dim the lights and reduce the hue. When watching something funny, you can increase the hue and change the light to a brighter color.
6. Don’t let the corners haunt you
One of the most enormous blank spaces in awkward living room layout ideas is deciding what to do with the nooks and corners of the room. There are no practical uses for the area.
Neither can you allow someone to sit there. You cannot use it for any fine decor or other utility. So, what should we do about those spaces?
If the same idea also haunts you, here’s the solution you can try. Imagine you have a 2×2 space where you can barely sit alone. Be clever; create a small workstation for yourself there. I often suggest such workspaces for small living room ideas.
A study desk and a laptop configuration with a sleek stool would be fine for that area. You can also use that space to display your book collection. Create a wall display for the finest ones in your collection.
Awkward, not awkward anymore!!
Your living room will be your happy place, once you have such unique, awkward layout ideas, ! We often function in many ways in our living rooms. So, it is better to have different sections in an abstract room.
That way, the room would not mess up easily. Again. There are many 1bhk apartments in the US. Most young couples buy single flats here. They may face the problem of an awkward living room any day.
So, it’s a living problem that needs prompt solutions.
Voila! You have brilliant ideas now. Please Go out and use your creative spree and the ideas I shared to design the living room of your dreams.
